ARETE EXHIBITION

The Arete Exhibition will be located in the Cloyde Snook Gallery in the Art Department. The exhibition will showcase five BFA seniors' work opening April 23rd with a closing reception May 11th.

Biography

Ashley Comly is currently a fine arts student at Adams State University in Alamosa Colorado. She grew up in Belgrade Montana. After high school Ashley enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps. She deployed to Iraq in 2005 and again in 2007. Ashley uses photography to express her experiences in the military.

Biography

Brent Montoya is a pop surreal artist who lives in the San Luis Valley in Colorado. Brent has been painting for five years and is currently studying for his Bachelor of Fine Arts and will be graduating in the Sring of 2018 from Adams State University. Brent received his Associates of Arts at Trinidad State Junior College in 2015 and has achieved a place on the Vice-President's Honor Roll in the Spring of 2017 and in the Fall of 2017. Brent has been involved with student shows and "pop-up" galleries within the local area.

Biography

Lucie Olivas, a native of the San Luis Valley raised in Antonito, Colo. is currently a senior at Adams State University. She will obtain her BFA in photography in May 2018. Taking her photographs and her new-found passion for ceramics, she brings the two mediums together to produce unique and one-of a-kind works of art.

The inspiration for her artwork includes family events, traditions, landscape, and her Hispanic heritage in relation to symbolism, memory, and nostalgia.  Lucie explores several aspects of storytelling from a personal perspective, revealing insight into her personal life. She produces artworks that aim to reveal distinctive stories. In her current exhibition, Spirit of Remembrance she reflects on nostalgic, precious, and distant memories using old photographs and keepsakes, which have been slip casted into ceramic pieces, a cyanotype photograph, and a one-month pinhole exposure, she builds a visual world of memory and identity, of place and home.

Biography

Robert Gallegos is a confident and creative designer from Alamosa, Colorado. He is selfmotivated, self-sufficient, and comes to you with a strong background in entrepreneurship. Robert is detail oriented and has a comprehensive understanding of the latest design technologies. As a hardworking and ambitious professional designer, Robert possesses a get it done attitude and always maximizes the impact of any marketing material. He develops creative solutions to various business complications, thus improving his client’s bottom line. Robert utilizes his extensive research in color theory and typography to evoke specific emotional responses from his client’s target market.

Biography

Andrew Rascón is a graphic designer from the San Luis Valley, raised in the small town of Fort Garland. As a child, Andrew has grown to love art as an escape to a world that he can control and express his creativity. He loves to make cartoons, do creative writing, and make digital art. He focuses on graphic design as his art field. Although growing up quiet, Andrew tends to listen to the world around him and implicate what he hears in his art. He will be receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Graphic Design to continue his journey making meaningful work that associates with current events in society that need the spotlight to make the world a better place celebrating everyone’s differences.

JURIED EXHIBITION

Biography

Malissa Smithey is an artist who has recently moved to Alamosa, Colorado from Grand Junction, Colorado where she grew up. Malissa became interested in photography as a Junior in High School when she took a beginner’s course. As a photographer, Malissa is drawn to the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Her interests spread worldwide as her goal is to become a travel photographer and novelist.

Biography

Patricia Rodriguez is an artist who lives in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. She has displayed her works in over a dozen group exhibitions, including a juried national small print show. Her artwork, much of which involves abstraction, spans a number of mediums: drawing, painting, photography, and printmaking. Recently her art is moving into portraiture, embracing self-portrait works, portraits without faces, and figural abstractions.

Biography

Native to Colorado, Brittany Wilson has spent the last three years exploring the San Luis Valley and double majoring in Art and Psychology at Adams State University. She works primarily in oil paints; her recent concentration has been on geometric abstraction. She hopes to utilize her background in art to pursue a Masters in Counseling and develop a private practice. Where she can begin to integrate artistic processes into individualized psychotherapeutic techniques for adolescents and adults who have experienced forms of physical or emotional neglect and trauma and often come from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds.
